CANCÚN, Quintana Roo — Rafael Marín Mollinedo has confirmed his intention to seek the municipal presidency of Benito Juárez, whose capital is Cancún, through Morena’s internal process ahead of the 2027 elections.
In an interview conducted on Friday, October 9, the former director of Mexico’s National Customs Agency announced that he planned to submit his registration application the following day.
“I’m going to register tomorrow. We’re going to register for the process; let’s see what happens,” he said.
When asked whether he would be running for mayor, he answered affirmatively and indicated that other members of the movement would also participate.
The announcement refers to his intention to run for mayor of Cancún. However, sources consulted did not find confirmation that he registered on Saturday, nor any party resolution accrediting him as a candidate.
Morena’s Internal Process
The process initiated by Morena corresponds to the Municipal Coordination Offices of the Committees for the Defense of Transformation and National Sovereignty. In Quintana Roo, it encompasses all 11 municipalities and requires applications to be submitted exclusively online from October 8 to 18.
These coordinating bodies are responsible for territorial organization, strengthening the movement’s structures, and implementing the strategies defined by the party’s governing bodies. Therefore, participating in this stage does not, in itself, constitute an electoral candidacy for mayor.
Marín’s mayoral aspirations come after his participation in the Morena state coordination process, which was won by Eugenio “Gino” Segura. After that result, Marín accepted the decision and announced that he would continue his political work from the grassroots level of the movement.
At a meeting held in Tulum in late September, he maintained that the unfavorable result did not change his loyalty to Morena and called for maintaining the organization and unity. Now, his statement places Benito Juárez as the municipality where he intends to continue his campaign for 2027.
