Quintana Roo Boosts Tourism with New Calderitas Coastal Zone

Quintana Roo, Mexico — Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Secretary of Tourism for Quintana Roo, detailed the various activities carried out in June to strengthen the tourism development model implemented by Governor Mara Lezama.

Key Initiatives and Events

The month began with Governor Lezama in Puerto Morelos, launching the National Beach Cleanup and Conservation Campaign to ensure 100% plastic-free shorelines. Progress was also made in tourist safety with the establishment of the Commission for the Protection of Consumers of Tourist Products.

Authorities participated in the Safe Travel Forum, collaborating to prevent human trafficking in the sector. The second session of the Technical Committee of the Trust for Strengthening Tourism in Quintana Roo (FOATQROO) took place, reviewing advancements in infrastructure, connectivity, and competitiveness as part of the 2030 Sustainable Tourism Master Plan.

Efforts against sargassum were reinforced, emphasizing that protecting the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean safeguards jobs, communities, and tourism. The new coastal zone of Calderitas was inaugurated to boost tourism in the southern region. In Mahahual, discussions with tourism entrepreneurs focused on strengthening the development of Costa Maya.

Over 2,000 swimmers participated in the Open Water Marathon in Bacalar.
