Mahahual, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo government has announced a 100 million peso investment to develop tourism infrastructure in Mahahual, a coastal destination in the southern part of the state.
State Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra said the funding comes from the Cruiser Trust, established in 2025 through a five-dollar fee charged to each cruise passenger arriving at the state’s ports.
The trust operates through coordination between various state agencies and cruise line representatives to ensure resources go to priority projects for destinations receiving cruise tourism.
The boardwalk will be one of the first areas addressed. Initial work will focus on renovating Mahahual’s boardwalk and improving the road connecting to the tourist zone. These projects were identified as priorities after consultation with residents, service providers, and local businesses.
“We’re listening to the community to define priorities. The boardwalk renovation and access road improvements are fundamental to enhancing the destination’s image,” Cueto Riestra said.
Medium-term projects under consideration include developing nautical infrastructure and potentially expanding the pier to attract more vessels and strengthen tourism activity in the area.
Later phases could include improvements to walkways, the main plaza, the road access to the lighthouse, and boardwalk expansion.
The Public Works Department will oversee construction in coordination with the Sustainable Urban Territorial Development Department and Othón P. Blanco municipality.
Regarding Mahahual’s access highway, Cueto Riestra said existing projects will be integrated as priorities are defined within the trust framework.
He clarified that sargassum management is not part of the trust, though efforts have been made to provide machinery for beach cleaning. The state Environment Department leads a separate strategy addressing the seaweed phenomenon.
On aviation infrastructure, Cueto Riestra mentioned the possibility of expanding Mahahual’s airstrip in the future, though it’s not an immediate priority. Current improvements focus on maintaining optimal conditions.
The official emphasized that these investments aim to position Mahahual as a more organized, competitive, and attractive tourism destination that generates greater economic benefits for local residents.
