Quintana Roo Updates Urban Plans for Sustainable Tourism

Officials discussing urban development programs in Quintana Roo

Cancún, Mexico — The Sustainable Tourism Master Plan has among its priorities to influence the Urban Development Programs of municipalities, which will help in the care of destinations.

Andrés Aguilar Becerril, Undersecretary of Tourism in Quintana Roo, highlighted that the Urban Development Programs established parameters in tourist zones without any reference to a state policy, but now work is being done and details are being refined to make a substantial change.

“Last Thursday (of the week before last), the first announcement was made by Benito Juárez for the update of its Urban Development Program (PDU), remembering that these are processes that go through public consultations and sessions of their municipal urban development councils, where the Secretariat of Tourism will now have a much more active participation than it used to have,” he stated.

That is part of the role that the secretariat is assuming, to have a participation not only more active but more justified and with binding instruments that allow generating that order.

This Tourism Master Plan, he pointed out, is already a current public policy and has been widely shared with the sector, so there should no longer be disorderly growth, nor overdensity, and above all, avoid phenomena that can harm the destination, such as the issue of touristification or gentrification.

“Something that I believe tourism should foster is to repair the social fabric of all communities,” he added.
