Tulum, Quintana Roo — The Sustainable Tourism Master Plan of Quintana Roo is one step away from becoming an official document, following the conclusion of the last technical workshop held in Tulum.

According to Andrés Aguilar Becerril, Undersecretary of Planning and Tourism Development of Sedetur, the project is in its final review phase and only awaits the publication of the Quintana Roo 2050 Strategic Plan to fully align with this long-term sustainable development vision.

A Roadmap for Each Tourist Destination

Aguilar Becerril explained that the Master Plan will establish a precise territorial reference for each destination, defining guidelines that will serve as a guide for tourism land use planning, as well as for urban and ecological planning throughout the state.

The undersecretary advanced that files are already being prepared for the declaration of sustainable tourism investment zones, a figure that will allow new projects to be guided under environmental and social sustainability criteria.

Recalibration of Destinations and New Action Criteria

The document also includes a recalibration of tourist destinations, assigning each one an action sector according to its level of development.

  • Emerging destinations: where growth can be accelerated, the priority will be to contain and order expansion, favoring low density.
  • Consolidated destinations, such as Cancún: the guideline is clear: do not grow more, but renew to correct accumulated problems.

“It is about renewing structure and product, and generating new policies and instruments that allow mitigating problems such as abandoned properties or wastewater treatment plants that are already at the limit. New technologies, investments, and better management schemes are required,” Aguilar stated.

Instruments That Already Influence the Territory

A strategic advance, the official highlighted, is that the Sustainable Tourism Master Plan, the declaration of Maya Ka’an, and the Urban Development Program of Felipe Carrillo Puerto have already been successfully articulated.

This demonstrates the capacity of these instruments to directly influence the territory and comprehensively guide tourism development in Quintana Roo.
