CHETUMAL — The head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), Julio César Gómez Torres, has called on citizens to report any abuse or inappropriate conduct by police officers, especially during the current holiday period. He affirmed there is no impunity for anyone and stated that attitudes contrary to the institution's principles and values are not permitted or condoned.

Agreement with Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office Streamlines Complaints

Gómez Torres stated that to ensure officers perform their duties correctly and meet public demand, a recent agreement was signed with the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. This ensures all complaints received through the 911 emergency line or the anonymous tip line 089 are addressed, with investigations initiated immediately.

"We already systematically monitor the performance of the different security forces, both state and municipal," said Gómez Torres. "In this exercise we have just signed an agreement with the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office so that all cases of complaints against public servants that are given to the 911 emergency number or to the anonymous complaints number 089, are immediately channeled through a liaison that has already been designated by the Prosecutor's Office itself, so that the file can be opened and the investigations can begin immediately."

Follow-Up on Social Media and Current Sanctions

He emphasized that complaints made through social media are also followed up, citing a firm intention to consolidate a reliable and effective police force. He stated any indication that this is not the case is corrected and sanctioned if necessary.

So far this year, 34 investigation files have been opened, resulting in 7 sanctions. Three officers received permanent dismissal and four police officers were suspended from their duties.

Holiday Security Operations and Infrastructure Checks

Authorities are currently focused on a special security operation for Holy Week. Rounds have been made to verify that traffic lights, video surveillance cameras, and panic buttons are working correctly, to ensure emergency support is provided as quickly as possible.

"We have been checking not only the video surveillance cameras, but also that all the panic buttons are working correctly," Gómez Torres explained. "We have found some that didn't work well and others that didn't activate, and we are already checking them, so that we can provide assistance to anyone who needs it as quickly as possible. We are currently in this special deployment that we have during this holiday period to cover the state and serve all those who visit us during this time."

He added that the operational plan will cover hotel and beach areas, highways, docks, and bus terminals. It will also include a security presence in resorts, cenotes, and archaeological zones in rural communities to guarantee a high level of security.
