Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home to major tourist destinations like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, has reached critical levels of human trafficking, according to a warning from the advocacy group Anthus.
Patricia Vázquez Curi, a representative for Anthus, said the region is now a “red alert” zone where sexual exploitation of women and minors, along with labor trafficking in the service sector, is prevalent.
Alarming Figures: A Business Outpacing Tech Giants
Data from the National Association Against Human Trafficking in Society indicates this crime generates annual profits of $150.2 trillion globally—a figure that surpasses the revenues of companies like Google or Amazon.
“The reality is devastating,” Vázquez Curi said. “Ninety percent of victims are never rescued, and it’s estimated one person disappears for this reason every three minutes.”
Pinky Cup: Sports for a Cause Against Exploitation
In response, the Pinky Cup has been launched—a women’s padel circuit designed to raise funds for the Villas Anthus project. This local facility will provide comprehensive care, including health services, housing, and social reintegration, for rescued survivors.
