Cancún — The Secretary of Welfare of Quintana Roo, Pablo Bustamante, reported that poverty in the state has registered a historic reduction of nearly 10 percent. This means 177,000 people have ceased living in that condition, reaching the lowest level in the last 15 years.
The official attributed the results to the coordination between the State Government and the Federal Government, as well as an unprecedented investment in social programs promoted by Governor Mara Lezama.
Direct Impact on the Population
In an interview with SQCS, Bustamante detailed that, in addition to the decrease in general poverty, a significant reduction in extreme poverty was also reported. This reflects progress in access to health services, food, housing, and social security.
Among the state programs that have had the greatest impact, he mentioned "Mujeres Poder" (Powerful Women), with 60,000 beneficiaries, and "Comemos Todas y Todos" (We All Eat), the largest food program in the state's history, which serves 57,000 families.
"These results motivate us to redouble our efforts and consolidate social programs so that more Quintana Roo residents have better living conditions," he stated.
Coordination with Federal Policies
The secretary acknowledged that federal policies, such as the increase in the minimum wage, have also been decisive for social advancement in Quintana Roo, along with the continuity of national programs.
Bustamante emphasized that the challenge is to ensure that support reaches those who need it most directly and free of charge, through constant monitoring.
"What backs us up are the official measurements, which show positive and tangible results. Seeing 177,000 people emerge from poverty is not only encouraging, it is proof that social policies are working," he pointed out.
The head of Welfare assured that the goal is to consolidate existing programs and strengthen supervision to maintain the reduction of deficiencies in a state that continues to grow at a rapid pace.
"We will continue working in a transversal manner, together with the municipalities and the Federation, always hand in hand with the governor who leads by example with her permanent work in the field," he indicated.
