Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo has re-entered the national spotlight for dengue cases, ranking eighth among Mexican states with the highest number of infections during the first four epidemiological weeks of 2026, according to federal health reports.

While the numbers may not appear alarmingly high, health officials remain on alert. The state has recorded 294 probable cases, with 13 confirmed through laboratory testing. So far, no dengue-related deaths have been reported in Quintana Roo.

The pattern of dengue infections in the state has fluctuated in the early weeks of the year. During week one, Quintana Roo did not appear in the top ten; it climbed to fifth place in week two, dropped out of the ranking in week three, and has now returned to the national list at eighth place in week four.

Nationally, the situation is more severe. Mexico is investigating 27 probable dengue deaths this year, primarily in states like Sonora, Michoacán, Veracruz, and Sinaloa, where case numbers have been higher.

Health authorities emphasize that prevention starts at home. The mosquito that transmits dengue breeds in any container with standing water, prompting officials to urge residents to dispose of trash, cans, bottles, and other unused items that could become breeding sites.

They also recommend covering water tanks and cisterns, turning over unused buckets, and washing flower vases and pet water bowls with soap and water before refilling them. The fight against dengue involves not just authorities but everyone, beginning in backyards, rooftops, and homes.
