KANTUNILKÍN, QR. – Producers from the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas participated in a workshop on melipona bees, focused on their rescue, management, and production, as part of efforts to preserve this native species and strengthen its sustainable use.
During the session, the Undersecretary of Government, Orlando Emir Bellos Tun, emphasized that the melipona bee represents a central element of Mayan culture and a productive option for rural communities, due to the growing demand for its honey in the market for its traditional uses and commercial value.
In this context, he highlighted the interest that native Mayan honey has generated among producers and specialized consumers.
Melipona Bee to Be Focus of Congress in Chetumal
The official announced that from June 30 to July 3, a specialized congress will be held in Chetumal, with the participation of producers from Lázaro Cárdenas, who will exchange experiences with national and international specialists in melipona bee management and native Mayan honey production.
Bellos Tun noted that speakers from various countries will attend the meeting, which will allow for learning about practices applied in other regions for the conservation, management, and commercialization of this species, as well as alternatives for rural producers in Quintana Roo.
Support and Fair Planned for Melipona Bee in 2026
He also indicated that from March 3 to 13, the operating rules for the meliponiculture project will be open, during which interested parties can complete procedures to access support aimed at rural producers in Quintana Roo dedicated to this activity.
Finally, Bellos Tun recalled that in 2025, the Honey Fair was held in Playa del Carmen and announced that in 2026, the event will take place in Cancún, with the purpose of expanding the dissemination and commercialization of products derived from the melipona bee.
