Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Citizen Security Department reports that approximately 80% of State Police officers are now equipped with body cameras, with municipal forces also making progress toward a mandatory December deadline for full implementation.

Cristina Torres Gómez, the state’s Secretary of Government, announced that all state and municipal police officers must have body cameras by December. “We cannot demand compliance without setting an example ourselves. We are doing quite well; I believe the state police force has achieved about 80% progress,” she said.

She noted that a national mandate requires state and municipal police to use the cameras to monitor officer performance. “Significant progress has been made. Remember, we have until December of this year for 100% of municipalities to have body cameras. Several municipalities already have plans to acquire them,” Torres Gómez added.

Regarding municipalities, she acknowledged advancements, particularly in the northern zone with higher economic activity. “In relation to body cameras, December this year is the deadline, and they have been progressing. Benito Juárez is quite advanced, Playa del Carmen is advanced, Isla Mujeres is advanced both in body cameras and vehicle cameras.”

However, some municipalities like Othón P. Blanco lag in implementation and have received support through the State Security Trust. “Many, due to their economic conditions—because it’s not just about installing cameras but also having the software and infrastructure—have been slower, but none can remain behind because the law is the law, and December 31 of this year is the final deadline,” she stated.

Torres Gómez also mentioned a separate program to install surveillance cameras in taxi units, which falls under the Quintana Roo State Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo). “It’s a comprehensive security program, and each municipality has a plan so that users of these services can have better transportation conditions, security, and many other things.”

She clarified that taxis with these cameras will not necessarily have taximeters, as the cameras are part of a transportation security program.
