Key Municipal Aspirants in Quintana Roo for 2027 Elections

Political aspirants in Quintana Roo municipalities

Quintana Roo, Mexico — While most politicians are focused on the 2027 gubernatorial succession in Quintana Roo, others are advancing their aspirations for municipal presidencies in their respective municipalities; not only from their current positions but through the formation of structures to promote their image.

Today we will look at three municipalities in particular: Isla Mujeres, Benito Juárez and Cozumel, where conditions seem clearer than in the rest of the demarcations, with the exception of Lázaro Cárdenas, where Nivardo Mena Villanueva is already preparing his re-election; as well as Playa del Carmen, territory worked by Estefanía Mercado Asencio, who, without much fuss, is advancing toward a second term.

Although in Isla Mujeres some misinformed individuals want to impose, through opinions, “outsiders,” the only one with real aspirations and deep roots on the island is the current Undersecretary of Welfare of the State Government, Edgar Gasca Arceo. At least that is what the islanders I consulted this weekend tell me, as well as those who live on the mainland.

Edgar Gasca’s experience is extensive. He was not only a candidate for municipal president of Isla Mujeres in 2015 for the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and in 2018 for the Morena-PVEM-PT coalition; he was also a local deputy from 2013 to 2016 and repeated in the position from 2019 to 2021. He has held two undersecretaryships: Government Liaison in the Secretariat of Government and Community Management. There is vast experience as a manager, promoter, administrator, legislator and public servant.

In Cozumel, Deputy Renán Eduardo Sánchez Tajonar is ahead of any other aspirant, regardless of the political party put before him. He has carried out constant advocacy work in favor of the welfare of Cozumel residents, as well as visits to each neighborhood, each street and each family living on the island. The people of Cozumel themselves say it: this is Renán’s time. They desire a public administration with new ideas and strategies, that thinks about how to narrow the inequality gap between those who have everything and those who have nothing.

In Benito Juárez (Cancún), although there are countless aspirants for municipal president — among men and women about a dozen are counted — the one presenting a serious, concrete proposal focused on social justice is Deputy Jorge Arturo Sanén Cervantes. Since his stage as councilor, from 2018 to 2021, he took social justice as his banner, placing the human being at the center of his management. Already in the XVIII Legislature, Sanén promotes initiatives that benefit people, thought for the welfare of all Quintana Roo residents, with emphasis on the protection of human rights and vulnerable groups.

Regardless of who is the candidate for governor of Quintana Roo in 2027, these three profiles should be in the electoral contest, as they have much to contribute to their respective municipalities. They have already shown that they do not seek power for power’s sake nor are they vulgar ambitious for the people’s resources; they are politicians who hope for an opportunity to serve and who, in the positions they have held, have demonstrated that this is their main objective. There you have it…

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, state officials and the municipal president of Lázaro Cárdenas, Nivardo Mena Villanueva, witnessed the remodeling of the highway connecting Kantunilkín with Chiquilá; a work that directly and indirectly benefits 764,684 inhabitants, in addition to strengthening the connectivity of communities such as Holbox, San Ángel and Solferino.

There, Mara Lezama highlighted that roads, routes, trains and connectivity are the first step for economic and social growth, because when a road opens, opportunities, hope and future also open. “It represents well-being, development with social justice and shared prosperity.” Meanwhile…
