Chetumal, Quintana Roo — During the winter season, the incidence of respiratory illnesses increases, prompting the Secretary of Health (SESA) to call on citizens to visit health centers and hospitals to get vaccinated against seasonal influenza. With the drop in temperatures that have been recorded, there is a risk that the number of sick people will increase.
Although the head of the State Health Services, Flavio Carlos Rosado, acknowledged that the number of cases has risen in recent weeks, he also insisted that during the vaccination campaign, projected goals are being achieved much faster than last year. Therefore, he said, those who have not yet been immunized still have time to receive the corresponding dose.
“The most important thing is to get vaccinated during this campaign because although we live in a wonderful state that we all love with very nice weather, it does have temperature changes that can make us vulnerable to respiratory illnesses, and my respectful suggestion is to get vaccinated. The campaign ends on April 3, so there is time for everyone to protect themselves. We are working so that the highest percentage of the population gets vaccinated now and is not susceptible to getting sick, and we are doing very well. There are cases, but to prevent more, we call on people to get the dose.”
The official mentioned that the combined efforts of the health sector in allocating resources for supplies and personnel, and even for implementing brigades and having presence in mobile medical caravans, aim to facilitate citizens’ access to vaccine administration. This is intended to keep the incidence of diseases that typically surge during this winter season stable or even decreasing.
“I suggest to the population that we do not lose the habit of care that we adopted during that terrible pandemic we experienced in 2020: washing our hands with soap and water, staying well hydrated, and obviously trying as much as possible to protect ourselves from sudden temperature changes. We are vaccinating at many points, so the ideal thing is to do it.”
According to data from the Secretary of Health of the Government of Mexico, Quintana Roo has already accumulated 57 cases of seasonal influenza and one death, placing the state in eighth place nationally for the number of confirmed cases of the illness.
However, given the forecast that the number will increase even more, the recommendation is to see a doctor if symptoms appear and to use face masks, which will help prevent spread.
