Chetumal, Mexico — Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama inaugurated a new dome at the Autonomous University of Quintana Roo (UQROO) campus in Chetumal on Friday, a project that will directly benefit 2,740 students.

“This space was born from listening,” Lezama said during the ceremony. “It addresses a reality that existed for years on this campus: activities under intense sun, exhausting heat, efforts made in complex conditions.”

The governor emphasized that responding to such needs is part of a “humanist government with a feminist heart that walks close to the people.” She added, “From now on, students have a place that protects, cares for health, and allows them to socialize, practice sports, and participate in cultural activities with dignity.”

The structure, built by the Public Works Secretariat (SEOP), cost over 3.3 million pesos from the 2025 Fund for Strengthening Federal Entities (FAFEF). It provides a dignified, safe, and functional space for the student community’s comprehensive development.

Lezama highlighted that public education is a priority for her administration, calling it a fundamental tool for social justice, equality, well-being, peacebuilding, and the state’s future development. She also recognized the work of UQROO’s academic and administrative staff, describing them as pillars of the institution.

The governor urged students to take ownership of the new dome, care for it, and transform it into a vibrant space that fosters ideas, projects, and activities to further strengthen the university.

The project originated from a formal request submitted by student Irán Abigail Morales Cruz to the governor during a campus visit on September 11, 2025.

The inauguration was attended by UQROO Rector Natalia Fiorentini Cañedo, Education Secretary Elda Xix Euán, Othón P. Blanco Municipal President Yensunni Martínez Hernández, Public Works Secretary José Rafael Lara Díaz, Deputy Saulo Aguilar Bernés, UQROO Student Council President Keidi Arleth Díaz Bautista, and Quintana Roo Institute of Transparency Director General José Alberto Muñoz Escalante, along with students, teachers, and university directors.
