Governor Mara Lezama delivering fishing equipment to cooperatives in Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo, Mexico — Through the Programa Impulso a la Productividad de la Pesca y la Acuacultura, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa delivered support to producers in the municipalities of Bacalar, Othón P. Blanco, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and Tulum, with an investment exceeding 8 million pesos. The objective is to strengthen productivity and the well-being of families dedicated to fishing.

The delivery took place at Fuente del Pescador on the occasion of Día Mundial del Pescador, where the state leader emphasized that public resources should return to the people.

“It is a historic investment, money from the people that returns to the people and not to private individuals, to strengthen this wonderful activity that is fishing,” she stated.

Support to Strengthen Fishing Productivity

During the event, four-stroke ecological engines, boats, trailers, safety equipment, GPS systems, and coolers were delivered. These supplies will improve working conditions and income for fishing cooperatives.

Among the program’s benefits are:

  • Modernization of fishing equipment
  • Greater safety at sea
  • Improvement in the cold chain for fishery products
  • Increase in productivity and profitability

The governor underscored that investing in the primary sector is not an expense, but an investment in the future, food security, and economic development.

Combating Corruption and Shared Prosperity

Mara Lezama recalled that her administration works with a different model, focusing on transparency and combating corruption, so that public resources can cover more social projects, infrastructure, and services.

“When a resource is allocated to fishing, agriculture, or cooperatives, it will always be an investment in life, security, and the future,” she affirmed.

Sustainable Fishing and Species Preservation

For his part, the head of the Secretaría de Desarrollo Agropecuario, Rural y Pesca (SEDARPE), Jorge Carlos Aguilar Osorio, highlighted that the state promotes responsible practices to ensure the sustainability of the fishing sector.

Among the actions mentioned are:

  • Respect for minimum catch sizes
  • Protection of reproductive species
  • Prevention of catching females with eggs
  • Promotion of responsible fishing

Additionally, he recognized the 25 fishing cooperatives operating in Quintana Roo and congratulated their members for their contribution to the local economy.

Historic Support After Over a Decade Without Significant Investment

Secretary Aguilar Osorio emphasized that it had been over 10 years since the fishing sector received support of this magnitude, and that the program seeks to provide tools, infrastructure, and fishing gear to improve the productivity and quality of life of coastal communities.
