The Quintana Roo Government, led by Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez, has confirmed extensive damage to over a thousand hectares of sugarcane crops. The damage is attributed to flooding, a result of inadequate waterways during the construction of segment 7 of the Tren Maya, overseen by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena).
In response, the Quintana Roo Government is working to ensure that Sedena compensates the affected farmers and makes necessary modifications to the waterways. The agricultural lands, particularly those in the ejido zone, were negatively impacted due to construction errors in the drains of segment 7, which spans from Chetumal to Escárcega. This has led to significant flooding in the sugarcane fields.
The State Government's Secretary has been successful in mediating between the farmers and Sedena, securing a compensation agreement of 50 million pesos for the sugarcane farmers.
Since July, Torres Gómez has been visiting the affected areas alongside Evaristo Gómez Díaz, the leader of the Local Union of Sugar Cane Producers (ULPCA), and representatives from the National Confederation of Rural Producers (CNPR). Other authorities, including Érika Ramírez Méndez, director of the National Water Commission (Conagua), were also present during the tour.
Throughout their visits, they have confirmed the crop damage and identified the lack of waterways and vehicle access points in several sections of the route.
