Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Government of Quintana Roo plans to double the budget allocated for road maintenance in 2026, according to Rafael Lara Díaz, head of the Secretariat of Public Works (SEOP), who acknowledged that the state has accumulated a maintenance and rehabilitation backlog of nearly 20 years.

This prolonged deterioration has left some sections “totally destroyed,” particularly in the southern part of the state, where heavy traffic and meteorological phenomena have accelerated wear and tear.

State Diagnosis: 6,000 Kilometers with Significant Damage

Quintana Roo has 6,000 kilometers of roads, of which approximately 2,000 are federal and about 4,000 belong to the state and municipalities, where the greatest damage is concentrated.

The SEOP conducted meetings and inspections with all municipalities to identify priorities.

“We have already surveyed nearly 1,000 kilometers topographically; this week we will present the complete diagnosis to the governor so she can determine where the intervention will begin,” explained Lara Díaz.

Most Damaged Sections: Southern Zone and Rural Roads

Among the most critical points are:

  • Chetumal–Bacalar
  • Felipe Carrillo Puerto
  • Harvest access roads, essential for rural communities and agricultural activities

These routes show deep wear due to constant use and lack of sustained investment.

Current Investment and Projection for 2026

During 2025, the SEOP executed 1.4 billion pesos in 350 infrastructure actions, including paving, section rehabilitation, and complementary works.

However, given the accumulated backlog, the official announced that the sector’s budget will double for 2026, with the goal of initiating a progressive recovery of the state road network.

“I believe it is time to attend to the communities and their roads, because the backlog is very severe,” he emphasized.
