Quintana Roo, one of Mexico's final safe havens for manatees, has launched its Tenth Annual Manatee Week, reinforcing its dedication to preserving this iconic species. The Environmental Protection Agency is utilizing workshops, lectures, and clean-up days to educate the public about the importance of safeguarding manatees and their habitats.
Manatees, currently classified as endangered, face numerous threats such as pollution, maritime traffic, and the loss of their primary food source, seagrass. In response to these challenges, state authorities, non-profit organizations, and coastal communities are collaborating to protect these marine mammals and their ecosystems.
Throughout the week, a variety of activities have been hosted in Laguna de Bacalar and the Bay of Chetumal, two of the country's most critical manatee habitats. Additionally, several interagency agreements have been signed to enhance conservation efforts and secure a future for this species.
