Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Government Secretariat has warned that no public school may demand payment of fees as a condition for enrolling or retaining a student, following complaints from parents about alleged charges at high schools.
Government Secretary Cristina Torres clarified that contributions promoted by some parent associations are entirely voluntary and not part of any authorized fee by the Education Secretariat.
Torres explained that such associations may organize activities or request cooperation to improve infrastructure or meet school needs, but emphasized that these contributions cannot become a requirement to access educational services.
In response to complaints that were even filed with the Quintana Roo State Human Rights Commission, the official urged parents and guardians to approach school principals to clarify any situation and reiterated that public education in Quintana Roo is a free right that cannot be conditioned on payment of any fee.
