Chetumal — The director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Innovation and Technology (IQIT), Javier Abraham Ayuso Sánchez, reported that the project to address connectivity needs on the stretch from Tulum International Airport to the municipal seat of Felipe Carrillo Puerto has not been shelved.
The plan to provide mobile phone coverage along at least 30 kilometers of the 60-kilometer route, known as “the silence zone,” remains on track. It is solely awaiting the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to make the electrical connection to activate Telcel’s network, thereby finally enabling communication on this part of the federal highway.
“We are currently still working on the issue of this silence zone between Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Tulum,” said Ayuso Sánchez. “Only the issue of electrical power from the CFE is missing so that communication can be established for 30 to 40 kilometers from Carrillo Puerto towards Tulum, and so that those who travel through there have phone signal for their own safety and do not remain out of communication. The Federal Electricity Commission is maintaining the line to be able to energize the tower, and we hope that Telcel remains willing to provide us with the service.”
He emphasized that the State Government has not contributed resources to complete this project; rather, all investment comes from the private initiative, through a telephone and real estate company and from Telcel, which initially offered to expand mobile coverage. The goal is to reduce risks and facilitate emergency response on a road where, for years, motorists have been left without communication.
“The state is not investing at the moment; all the investment is from private initiative,” Ayuso Sánchez stated. “But we do not have the amount because they handle all that, and as it is a private investment, they do not provide us with that data.”
It should be noted that the silence zone stretch has a Wi-Fi system, implemented through the Safe Points program, designed to offer satellite internet and allow communication in areas without cellular coverage and direct access to emergency services in case of mechanical failures or risky situations. However, the antennas are placed at certain intervals with long distances between one and another, which has caused some inconveniences for stranded motorists.
In contrast, with this new modality and the network that will be able to operate immediately, the benefit will be for the thousands of people who travel daily on this highway.
