Playa Express van robbery report debunked by authorities

Quintana Roo, Mexico — The alleged robbery of a Playa Express van on the Cancún–Playa del Carmen route did not occur, according to an official statement from Quintana Roo’s Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC). Initial reports, circulated by the outlet Grupo Informativo Riviera and later replicated by other platforms without labeling the incident as "alleged" or "unconfirmed," were found to lack official backing after an investigation by the State Highway Police (PEC).

No Evidence of Recent Attack

The viral report claimed that on Sunday, June 8, five armed men intercepted a Playa Express van near Puerto Morelos and robbed passengers of their belongings. However, PEC officers interviewed drivers from the transport service and confirmed no units reported an incident matching these details.

Authorities also verified that no formal complaint had been filed with the State Attorney General’s Office regarding the alleged robbery.

Misinformation Linked to Past Incident

The SSC clarified that the viral post referenced an event from several years ago, taken out of context to incite public alarm. Officials cross-checked the claims with driver testimonies and real-time incident logs, finding no evidence of a recent attack targeting the transport company’s passengers.

Authorities emphasized that spreading false information disrupts security operations and creates unnecessary panic. They also warned against manipulated social media content, particularly when it lacks official verification or updated investigative support.

Ongoing Security Measures

The SSC reiterated that surveillance operations remain active on Quintana Roo’s highways, including high-traffic routes like the Cancún–Playa del Carmen corridor. Residents were urged to avoid sharing unverified reports and to consult trusted sources before disseminating alerts.

Suspicious activity should be reported to emergency line 911 or directly to patrolling officers to ensure swift response.
