QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — The winners of the 2025 State Sports Award in Quintana Roo were announced this Wednesday following a transparent selection process. The names of the honorees were revealed after a draw and an intense deliberation by the selection committee that lasted more than three hours.
The winners will be formally honored by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa on November 20, as part of the celebrations for the Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.
The individuals distinguished with the State Sports Award are Andrés Dupont Cabrera and Lya Sánchez Toledo in the athlete category. In the coach category, Yasmín Hernández Valera and Carlos Matos Zavala were selected.
“It is fundamental to recognize the effort, discipline, and commitment of those who raise the name of Quintana Roo high in every competition,” expressed Jacobo Arzate Hop, president of the State Sports Commission (CODEQ).
Distinguished Sports Careers in Quintana Roo
In the Conventional Sports category, Cancun native Andrés Dupont Cabrera, a specialist in swimming, was recognized for his outstanding participation in international tournaments and his progress toward the next Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, Playa del Carmen native Lya Sánchez Toledo, a representative in Para Archery, won the award in the Adapted Sports modality, after joining the Mexican National Team and competing successfully in national and international events.
Among the coaches, Yasmín Hernández Valera was honored for the achievements obtained with her athletes in Para Dance Sport, while Carlos Matos Zavala, of Weightlifting, received the recognition for his outstanding career in one of the state's most productive disciplines.
A special recognition was also awarded to Professor Georgina Tatiana Roque Roque for her work in promoting and fostering sports in the state.
Award for Sports Excellence Presented for the First Time in Quintana Roo
During the session, the first edition of the 2025 Award for Sports Excellence was also presented. This award was created to recognize those who have already obtained the State Sports Award in previous years and continue to excel in the sports arena.
The winners were Chetumal native Herzeleid Carrasco Cets in Weightlifting, Playa del Carmen native Citlali Borges Tun in Para Swimming, and Professor Arturo Martínez Rodríguez, a coach in Para Athletics.
The selection process was certified by Notary Public No. 17, Ángel Aguilar Núñez, guaranteeing the transparency of the results. The jury was composed of representatives from sports associations, specialized journalists, and prominent figures from Quintana Roo sports.
The official awards ceremony will take place on November 20, headed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, reaffirming Quintana Roo's commitment to sports development and the promotion of local talent.
