Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Following the success of its inaugural driving course, the Puerto Morelos Municipal Traffic Department announced a new free theoretical and practical driving program, set to run from May 19 to June 20. The initiative, organized under the directives of Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz, aims to improve road safety by educating new drivers on traffic regulations and defensive driving techniques.

Expanded Course Structure for Better Results

Jorge Villegas Cerino, head of the Traffic Department, reported that the first course, held from March 10 to 21, yielded strong results, with participants—many of whom had never driven before—mastering maneuvers such as reversing and three-point parking. The department estimated a 70% to 80% knowledge retention rate.

To enhance effectiveness, the upcoming course will extend its duration and focus more on practical training. Enrollment will be limited to 30 participants, with sessions held Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., totaling 50 hours of instruction. The first week will cover theoretical lessons, while the remaining weeks will emphasize hands-on practice.

Accessibility and Safety Focus

Applicants must be at least 17 years old, and no personal vehicle is required—participants will use a department-provided car for training. Villegas Cerino stressed the program’s importance in reducing accidents caused by insufficient knowledge of traffic laws.

“As authorities, we witness daily accidents attributed to drivers’ lack of familiarity with road rules,” he said. “This course prioritizes traffic education and defensive driving to safeguard all road users.”

The curriculum includes traffic regulations, road safety, defensive driving techniques, and accident prevention. Topics such as pedestrian rights, cyclist and motorcyclist safety, and road signage will also be covered.

A Long-Term Commitment

Villegas Cerino confirmed that the program will continue throughout the current administration, reinforcing Puerto Morelos’ commitment to safer roads. The initiative marks the first time such a course has been offered in the municipality.
