Women’s Sport Fishing Tourney Hits Puerto Morelos July 11-12

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The eighth edition of the International Women's Sport Fishing Tournament La Diosa del Mar is set to take place on July 11 and 12 at the main pier near the iconic leaning lighthouse in Puerto Morelos. Organizers have confirmed that 20 boats are already registered for the event.

Tournament Details and Participation

During a press conference, Karla Luna, president of the organizing committee and founder of the tournament, provided details alongside local authorities and sponsors. She noted that registrations remain open, with participants expected from Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, Cancún, and Puerto Morelos, as well as Mérida, Yucatán.

“We expect last-minute registrations this week, including some who sign up on the day of the tournament,” Luna explained. The competition will follow a catch-and-release format to preserve billfish populations.

Luna expressed gratitude for the support from the state and municipal governments, as well as sponsors, including the newspaper Quintana Roo Hoy and Grupo Cantón.

“We are thrilled to have Quintana Roo Hoy and Don Miguel Cantón Zetina as our special guests. From the moment we met, he has supported our project wholeheartedly,” Luna said. “He is deeply committed to our event, women’s empowerment, and promoting women’s sport fishing in Quintana Roo.”

Registration and Prizes

Registrations remain open online at www.ladiosadelmarpm.com.mx with a fee of 5,000 pesos per team. Weigh-in will begin at 3:00 PM and close at 5:00 PM, followed by the awards ceremony at 6:00 PM.

The first-place team will receive 100,000 pesos, second place 50,000 pesos, third place 30,000 pesos, fourth place 15,000 pesos, and fifth place 5,000 pesos, along with trophies. Additionally, the winning team will earn three passes to the prestigious Billfish Tournament at Tropic Star Lodge in Panama, ranked among the top ten sport fishing destinations in the world.

Officials in Attendance

The press conference was attended by José de Jesús Espinosa, Secretary of the Puerto Morelos City Council; Raúl Guadarrama, Secretary of Sustainable Tourism; Aimee Rodríguez, Secretary of Environment, Animal Welfare, and Mobility; Elena Gutiérrez, Secretary of Economic Development; Gamaliel Ek of Pescando en el Caribe; and Héctor López, manager of Hotel El Cid Puerto Morelos.

The event underscores Puerto Morelos’ commitment to promoting sport fishing and women’s participation in the sport.
