Leona Vicario, Quintana Roo — Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz inaugurated a community kitchen in Leona Vicario on Monday, a facility designed to provide food support for vulnerable residents and strengthen community solidarity.
“This community kitchen shows that in Puerto Morelos we work with a human touch, prioritizing those who need it most and fostering solidarity among our people,” the mayor said during the opening ceremony.
The social program will benefit 100 people total, with 50 from low-income sectors receiving priority access to free meals. This group includes single mothers, heads of households, people with disabilities, and citizens facing economic difficulties. Another 50 people can access the service through an affordable recovery fee to help sustain the kitchen’s operations.
Leona Vicario delegate Elsy Lucelly Benítez Arzapalo welcomed attendees and thanked municipal authorities for their support of local residents.
Mara Surlema Betancourt Pech, director general of Social Management, highlighted the mayor’s commitment to ensuring food security for residents. Beneficiaries received identification badges to access meals, which can also be used by family members or neighbors if the primary recipient cannot attend.
Hilda Rubí Antele Hernández, speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the economic support. Fellow beneficiary Pascual Hernández Rosas also attended the inauguration.
The kitchen will operate Monday through Friday from 12:00 to 14:00 hours. Mayor Tziu Muñoz announced plans to open another community kitchen in the municipal seat to expand the social programs promoting well-being, inclusion, and community support throughout Puerto Morelos.
Several municipal officials accompanied the mayor at the opening, including Secretary General José de Jesús Espinosa Payán, Public Services Secretary Leonel Salazar Trejo, and Environment, Animal Welfare and Sustainable Mobility Secretary Aimee Rodríguez Vivas.
