Road safety education program for students in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Mexico — With the primary objective of fostering solid road safety education from the earliest stages of human development, the Puerto Morelos city council launched a high-impact pedagogical initiative. This strategy, coordinated jointly with the private sector, aims for the girls and boys of the municipality to acquire fundamental knowledge about safe behavior on public roads. The implementation of this educational scheme responds to the need to transform urban dynamics and ensure that future generations possess the necessary tools to travel with responsibility and mutual respect.

The arrival of this program at the David Alfaro Siqueiros primary school, located in the municipal seat, represents a significant advance in the integration of practical content outside the conventional classroom. Through collaboration between the Secretariat of Environment, Animal Welfare, and Sustainable Mobility and the ADO Foundation, a bridge has been established between theoretical knowledge and daily practice. For the local government, road safety education is not just an additional subject, but a fundamental pillar for building a citizenry more aware of its rights and obligations when interacting with the urban environment.

Implement Sustainable Mobility Strategies

Within the framework of this project, sustainable mobility is positioned as a cross-cutting axis that seeks to reduce environmental impact and improve efficiency in citizen travel. During the inaugural event, authorities highlighted that teaching transportation alternatives and respect for bike lanes are essential steps to modernize the municipality’s social infrastructure. The head of the environmental department, Aimee Regina Rodríguez Vivas, stated that these actions not only protect the physical integrity of minors but also promote a city model more harmonious with the environment, where pedestrians and cyclists regain their importance in public space.

The educational program is designed to be inclusive and dynamic, allowing the 440 morning shift students to experience firsthand the challenges of urban circulation. By integrating concepts of sustainable mobility, the aim is for minors to understand the importance of using less polluting means of transportation and respecting traffic signals designed to protect the most vulnerable groups. This comprehensive approach allows road safety education to be perceived as a tool for coexistence and not just as a set of prohibitive rules.

DH Bus Project Transforms Civic Teaching

The heart of this initiative is the DH Bus Project, a mobile classroom equipped with cutting-edge technology and interactive modules that has traveled to various communities in the country. This adapted bus allows learning to be playful and memorable, facilitating that complex road safety concepts are easily assimilated by students. According to those responsible for the ADO Foundation, this vehicle has operated for a decade, accumulating experience in more than 1,500 communities, which guarantees a proven and effective methodology for transmitting civic culture values.

The structure of the DH Bus Project includes screens and educational games that simulate real traffic situations. In the central courtyard of the educational facility, a “mini-city” was installed that allowed students to practice as pedestrians and future drivers in a controlled environment. This practical experience is vital for consolidating road safety education, as it allows children to identify potential risks and adopt prevention measures intuitively. The participation of figures such as Iván Cupul, commercial manager of ADO, and Jorge Luis Villegas Cerino, director of the Municipal Traffic Police, reinforces the interinstitutional commitment to child safety.

The importance of having tools like the DH Bus Project lies in its mobility capacity, being able to reach corners where traditional educational infrastructure might be limited. At the end of the day, teachers and municipal authorities agreed that this type of direct intervention generates a positive change in the perception of public safety. Road safety education thus becomes a catalyst for improving the quality of life in Puerto Morelos, laying the foundations of a society that values prevention over reaction to traffic accidents.
