Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz has intensified beach cleaning operations in Puerto Morelos as the tourist destination prepares for an Easter holiday season with over 80% hotel occupancy expected.
The operation covers more than 2 kilometers of public beaches using specialized machinery and 40 workers focused on keeping the sands clear of sargassum and in optimal condition for visitors.
Authorities said the early arrival of the macroalgae forced them to implement preventive measures to reduce its impact and preserve the image of the Caribbean destination.
Gerardo Rosas, head of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), said they are using sweepers, backhoes, and heavy equipment, along with ongoing work to ensure cleanliness, safety, and services in the busiest areas.
The municipality is paying special attention to Blue Flag certified beaches, maintaining international standards, while coordinating efforts with the Mexican Navy to contain sargassum offshore.
Mayor Tziu Muñoz reiterated that these actions aim to protect the natural environment and ensure a quality experience, which is key to sustaining economic benefits during one of the year’s most important tourist seasons.
