Cancún, Mexico — The Benito Juárez Municipal Government, through Municipal Trustee Miguel Ángel Zenteno, will formally present a proposal for Puerto Juárez to be recognized as a Barrio Mágico, a federal distinction that seeks to highlight localities with cultural wealth, history, traditions, and tourist appeal.

The initiative will be submitted in January to the federal Secretary of Tourism and will be accompanied by a comprehensive plan. This plan encompasses the conservation of the community's cultural and historical identity, the strengthening of festivals, cultural activities, and local events, improvements in infrastructure, mobility, and accessibility for residents and visitors, as well as strategies for tourism promotion at the national and international level.

Among the benefits Puerto Juárez would obtain is an increase in tourist traffic and local economic spillover. The designation would also position the community as an alternative and complementary destination to Cancún's hotel zone, incentivize the preservation of architectural and cultural heritage, and facilitate access to federal investment programs for infrastructure and urban development.

The trustee recalled that since the 2018-2021 administration, strategic investments have been made in lighting, paving, potable water, and drainage. These investments have allowed for the consolidation of the area and the fulfillment of a significant portion of the requirements needed to obtain the distinction. He added that following the success of events such as the Janal Pixán held at the site, they see a probability of being able to obtain this recognition.

It is worth mentioning that Mexico has 34 Barrios Mágicos, with the Historic Center of Chetumal being the first to receive this recognition in November 2022.

Puerto Juárez, one of the first neighborhoods that saw Cancún grow, seeks to join this program, strengthening its identity and consolidating itself as a cultural and tourist reference in the region.
