Hundreds of families and long-term residents of Solidaridad county gathered to voice their support for a proposed name change to Playa del Carmen. The third public forum discussing the change took place in the main dome of Puerto Aventuras, filled with community members bearing banners and signs in support of the initiative.
The push for the name change is led by County President Estefanía Mercado and is backed by various sectors of the community. Supporters chanted slogans such as 'Long live Playa del Carmen!', 'Playa del Carmen, a name with history!', 'Playa del Carmen is our identity, it's time to make it official!' and 'Yes to Playa del Carmen!'. The event became a lively community gathering, complete with traditional local music that energized the attendees.
Mayor Gilberto Gómez, along with other officials and city council members, expressed their support for the constitutional reform project to change the county's name. “We are going to strongly support this initiative so that the county is known as Playa del Carmen, because that is how it is recognized globally, not as Solidaridad," stated the Mayor of Puerto Aventuras.
During the event, a group of community leaders and taxi drivers also voiced their support for the name change. The initiative aligns with the principles and goals of the Fourth Transformation, a local development project focused on the well-being and prosperity of the county.
Officials and city council members addressed concerns raised by attendees, assuring them that the name change would not incur any costs to the residents of Playa del Carmen and would not require them to renew their personal documentation. They cited past successful name changes, such as when Solidaridad became the eighth county of Quintana Roo, and when the Federal District became Mexico City, to alleviate concerns about potential administrative and legal costs.
The fourth and final public forum to discuss the proposed name change from Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen is scheduled to take place this Saturday at 6 pm at the City Theater.
