Quintana Roo’s Revolutionary Judicial Elections Shake Up Tradition

Starting February 15, Quintana Roo will embark on a historic journey with the initiation of the election process for judges and magistrates. This unprecedented move will enable citizens to elect those who will administer justice in the state, thereby ending the prevailing system of political nominations within the Judiciary.

The selection process will be thorough. A committee will review applications and choose the most suitable candidates, which will then be narrowed down to a shortlist of three for each position. In total, 105 judges and 9 magistrates will be elected through a vote scheduled for the first Sunday in June.

Applications will be open from February 15 to 24. Eligibility criteria include being a Mexican by birth, a citizen of Quintana Roo, holding a law degree, and having achieved a minimum average of eight in their studies, among other requirements that ensure the competence of the candidates. Political parties will not be allowed to interfere in this process.

Campaigns will be limited to one month and will be aired exclusively on radio and television, managed by the Electoral Institute of Quintana Roo.
