Puerta al Mar Tourist Access Completed in Felipe Carrillo Puerto

The completed Puerta al Mar tourist access point in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Army has completed and handed over the “Puerta al Mar” tourist access project to the state government, though the formal inauguration may be delayed by about a month due to scheduling and administrative agreements.

Mayor Mary Hernández confirmed that residents can already visit the site, but an official ceremony expected to include President Claudia Sheinbaum and the handover of a new general hospital remains pending.

Funding and Environmental Protection

Authorities plan to establish a trust fund to reinvest revenue from the site, pending approval from the local ejido that owns the transfer zone. Hernández noted that coordination is needed to ensure public safety, medical services, and maintenance, areas where neither the ejido nor the municipality has sufficient resources.

The state government also intends to invest in the area, particularly to improve lagoon conditions in response to requests from ejido members.

Fonatur, Mexico’s tourism development agency, will invest 26 million pesos in signage and water conservation projects. The municipality plans to spend 20 million pesos on a treatment plant in Muyil to protect the lagoon, which has begun to change color.

Hernández added that officials will seek to “bring order” to Muyil by regulating construction to preserve the area’s urban and environmental integrity.
