Playa del Carmen, Mexico — More than 14 people, including several minors, were injured this Tuesday following a rear-end collision between a public transport van, known locally as a "combi," and a private car on Avenida Universidades at the intersection with Paseo del Mayab in Playa del Carmen.
The accident occurred around 4:00 in the afternoon. The collective transport unit, with the route number 273 and serving the route to Cristo Rey, was struck from behind by a Honda vehicle with license plates from the state of Yucatán.
According to initial reports, the incident originated when the driver of the combi stopped to pick up passengers. The car traveling behind it failed to brake in time and subsequently crashed into the rear of the public transport vehicle.
Witnesses alerted emergency services, prompting the arrival of paramedics from the Municipal Civil Protection unit at the scene to provide care to the passengers.
Based on reports from the paramedics, some of the occupants of the transport unit sustained blows to different parts of their bodies and were also suffering from nervous shock, making their transport to a hospital necessary.
The operator of the combi suffered a head wound, as it appears he was not wearing a seatbelt at the moment of impact.
