The Quintana Roo Government has announced that the rehabilitation of the Mahahual port aerodrome in the southern region of the state is progressing. This project is a joint effort with the private sector, represented by the Lahun Tiku business community and Global Costa Maya.
The improvement and maintenance works are being carried out on the Costa Maya aerodrome in the port of Mahahual. The refurbishment includes maintenance of the 1200 meter long and 25 meter wide runway, as well as the aircraft parking platform measuring 41 meters by 58 meters. Other improvements include cleaning, painting, flooring, restroom upgrades, and general terminal services.
This refurbishment is crucial for facilitating the arrival of private aircraft and regional airlines. This will connect more tourists with Costa Maya and its tourist capital, Mahahual. The plan to reactivate the aerodrome also aims to stimulate progress, development, and economic growth for the southern area of the state and its residents.
Mahahual is a significant tourist destination, having welcomed 153,000 tourists and 1.5 million cruise ship passengers in 2023. The majority of visitors, 90%, are from the national market, with 45% aged between 20 and 29. Tourists typically stay for an average of 6.2 days and usually travel in groups of 3.4 people, with a return rate of 33%.
