Profepa Closes Yucatán Property Over Illegal Deforestation

Kinchil, Yucatán — The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) imposed a total temporary closure on a property located in the municipality of Kinchil, Yucatán, after confirming the illegal removal of forest vegetation on an area of 56,814 square meters, as well as its use for the management and storage of chicken manure and other activities not permitted on land with forest vocation.

According to the environmental authority, during a forestry inspection visit conducted on December 21, the opening of access roads, the elimination of natural vegetation, and the use of the property for the direct discharge of chicken excrement known as gallinaza onto the soil were verified, constituting a change in land use without the corresponding authorization from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).

Different impacted areas were identified at the site, including zones enabled as roads for the transit of cargo vehicles, surfaces destined for agricultural activities, and a larger area used for the disposal of organic material. Together, these actions caused significant damage to the natural vegetation cover of the property.

At the time of the inspection, Profepa personnel did not locate any person responsible for the observed activities, so, as a security measure, the total closure of the place proceeded through the placement of official seals. Additionally, the precautionary seizure of a metal gondola-type trailer, allegedly used for the transport of the chicken manure, was carried out.

Profepa reported that it will continue with the corresponding administrative procedure and reiterated its commitment to monitor compliance with environmental legislation, as well as to act against any activity that represents damage to the forest ecosystems of Yucatán.
