Cancún — President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that Mexico is currently experiencing the most democratic period in its history and is "the most democratic country in the world" during a presentation of her first government report on Quintana Roo, held at the Tajamar malecón.
Accompanied by Governor Mara Lezama, federal and local legislators, officials from all three levels of government, and ten of the state's eleven municipal presidents, Sheinbaum dedicated a significant portion of her speech to detailing the reach of social welfare programs in Quintana Roo. These programs now benefit 370,371 recipients with an annual investment of 8,993 million pesos. The only absent mayor was Othón P. Blanco municipal president Yensunni Martínez, who is the lowest-rated in the state.
In her address, the federal leader highlighted that more than 105,000 senior citizens in Quintana Roo now receive a universal pension; 15,661 people with disabilities have support; nearly 60,000 high school students receive a scholarship to continue their studies; and more than 29,000 small producers have been supported through Production for Well-Being and free fertilizer programs.
She further emphasized that 2025 marked the start of the Women's Well-Being Pension for Mexican women between 60 and 64 years old, a program which, she said, seeks to recognize the caregiving work historically assumed by women. "When we arrived at the presidency of the Republic, all women arrived," exclaimed Sheinbaum, which prompted chants of "President! President!" from the attendees.
The President recalled that, in honor of the Yucatecan teacher Rita Cetina, a scholarship for public secondary school students was created, which already benefits more than 70,000 young people in Quintana Roo. She also provided information about the Health House by House program, which brings medical care directly to senior citizens and people with disabilities, and announced the upcoming opening of well-being pharmacies across the country to guarantee the free supply of medicines.
The speech also included infrastructure announcements for the state: the completion of the Nichupté bridge in Cancún, the construction of a new campus for the Rosario Castellanos University, the building of more high schools in Benito Juárez and Playa del Carmen, improvements to the highway to Isla Blanca, and the construction of 48,584 homes for families earning less than two minimum wages. "The tourist zone grew, but the neighborhoods were left behind and that is very unfair. Now working families will have access to dignified housing, with low and fair credits," she stated.
She noted that in the state, 250,000 families will benefit from the reduction of their Infonavit and Fovissste debts, many of whom will even receive their property deeds at no cost.
Claudia Sheinbaum also announced the completion of the General Hospital of Chetumal by November 2025, the construction of a family medicine unit in Playa del Carmen, the comprehensive rehabilitation of Regional General Hospital number 17 in Cancún, and a women's care center in each municipality.
Regarding strategic projects, the leader reiterated that the Maya Train will also function as a freight train to strengthen the southeast's economy and announced that federal highway maintenance works in Quintana Roo will resume in October.
The event at the Tajamar malecón took place before thousands of people who constantly cheered the president with the chant of "President!" The political festival atmosphere was led by Mara Lezama, who in her welcome speech acknowledged Sheinbaum's closeness with the families of Quintana Roo and assured that the transformation is felt in the state.
Claudia Sheinbaum concluded her address with a commitment: "I will never distance myself from the people of Quintana Roo, I will never distance myself from the people of Mexico. Together, we know that any problem we face, if we are united, there is nothing that can stop us."
"Long live Quintana Roo!" she exclaimed, as the crowd responded in unison: "Long live!"
