Ice Factory Fire in Playa del Carmen Sparks Extortion Probe

Fire damage at the Poseidon ice factory in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Security and emergency services were activated in an urban area of Playa del Carmen early Tuesday morning following a deliberately set fire at an ice factory identified as “Poseidon,” located in the Ejido neighborhood. The incident caused severe material damage to the commercial structure and third-party property.

According to preliminary information, the fire consumed at least two delivery vehicles and part of the factory’s warehouse, prompting an intense mobilization of Civil Protection, Fire Department, and municipal police personnel. Authorities cordoned off the area due to the risk of the fire spreading.

The flames reached the electrical wiring and the building’s facade, forcing residents in the area to evacuate preventively to avoid more serious accidents. Witnesses indicated that moments before the fire, gunshots were heard, followed by the sound of a motorcycle speeding away, which reinforces the hypothesis of a targeted attack.

Although no injuries were reported, authorities described the structural damage as serious, which will lead to the temporary suspension of operations for the company, known for supplying ice to restaurants, stores, and businesses along the Riviera Maya tourist corridor.

Unofficially, it emerged that the attack could be related to the business’s refusal to pay extortion money to a criminal cell, a scheme that in recent months has reportedly attempted to expand to small and medium-sized businesses in the food and distribution sector.

The State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation file for the crime of property damage and possible offenses linked to organized crime. Meanwhile, specialized experts are analyzing the area in search of residues of accelerant liquids, such as gasoline or industrial solvents, to confirm how the fire started.

Residents expressed concern about the escalation of violence in residential areas, noting that this type of attack is no longer limited to tourist areas or nightlife centers. Authorities did not rule out reinforcing preventive operations, in coordination with federal agencies, in commercial and storage zones considered at risk.
