Merida, Yucatan — A joint federal and state security operation resulted in the seizure of 12 million pesos in cash and a firearm, along with the arrest of two men, at a checkpoint on the Merida-Cancun highway.

The operation occurred under the Teya bridge, a key transportation route connecting Yucatan and Quintana Roo states, as part of ongoing security measures in the region.

Police officers stopped a white Jeep with private security company markings. According to official reports, the occupants initially resisted inspection, prompting a more thorough search.

During the inspection, officers discovered one man carrying a handgun. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a travel bag containing the 12 million pesos in cash.

Authorities detained both men after they failed to provide documentation proving the legal origin or authorized transport of the money.

The suspects were identified as B.A.M.R., 54, and J.S.G., 57, both from Mexico City. One man claimed to be a retired federal agent currently working in private security, stating they provided services for a company operating in Quintana Roo.

Officials turned the men, cash, and firearm over to prosecutors for further investigation.

The Merida-Cancun highway serves as a strategic route in southeastern Mexico, handling significant tourist, commercial, and cargo traffic. Checkpoints remain active as part of preventive security strategies in the state.

Yucatan’s Public Security Department stated that investigators have found no evidence linking the case to organized crime at this time. However, they emphasized that the investigation continues to determine the origin of the funds and the legal status of the detainees.

The seizure represents one of the largest cash confiscations recorded in Yucatan this year.
