Playacar Residents Fight for Deer Killed by Deforestation

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents of Playacar, one of Playa del Carmen’s most exclusive neighborhoods, held a protest on Sunday to demand justice following the death of a deer named "Manchitas," which was struck by a vehicle after being displaced by unregulated deforestation.

The deer, which had recently given birth, was killed inside the residential complex after vegetation was cleared from a previously shut-down property. According to residents, the deforestation was carried out without a wildlife relocation plan, forcing dozens of animals into urban areas in search of shelter.

A Symbol of Environmental Neglect

"Manchitas did not die by accident. She was a direct victim of environmental disregard and the unchecked destruction of habitat," one protester declared during the peaceful demonstration outside Playacar’s offices. The crowd chanted, "We don’t want them!" in reference to the developers responsible.

Manchitas’ fawn, only days old, remains missing, intensifying concerns among residents who have organized search efforts. In response to the tragedy, the community announced plans to file a collective criminal complaint over the deforestation and its consequences. They also called for immediate intervention by Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), which they accuse of ignoring prior reports.

A Call to Protect Wildlife

Residents vowed to continue their fight until stronger protections for wildlife are enforced. The image of Manchitas has become a rallying symbol, underscoring the urgent need to preserve what remains of the region’s jungle before irreversible damage occurs.

Photographs from the protest showed demonstrators holding signs and demanding accountability, reinforcing their message that unchecked development must not come at the cost of local ecosystems.
