Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Directorate of Agricultural and Fisheries Development is currently updating the registry of producers in Playa del Carmen, which had not been revised for 15 years, leaving gaps in data on local agro-food activities.

Outdated Registry Overhauled

Luis Alejandro López Acuña, Director of Agricultural and Fisheries Development, reported that the administration initially received a registry with only 320 producers. However, between 70 to 80 updates have since been made, providing a clearer picture of current production in the region.

"We received a registry of approximately 320 producers, but it had not been updated in a long time. No one had verified what productive activities were actually being carried out," López Acuña stated.

Competitive Local Products Highlighted

The director emphasized that Playa del Carmen boasts producers capable of competing in broader markets, thanks to high-quality goods such as Persian lime, Indian lime, pitahaya, and honey pineapple. Additionally, the municipality includes an aquaculture farmer producing 1.5 tons of tilapia annually, distributed to local restaurants, as well as 30 to 40 beekeepers.

Collaborative Efforts for Market Access

Municipal authorities are working alongside the Directorate of Economic Development to secure commercial opportunities for these producers. Partnerships with the Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development of Quintana Roo (Sedarpe) and federal agencies aim to integrate producers into government support programs.

The update marks a significant step in modernizing Playa del Carmen’s agricultural and fisheries sector after years of stagnation.
