Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo – Playa del Carmen rang in 2026 in spectacular fashion, reinforcing its growing reputation as a global hub for major cultural and tourism events. Thousands of people from Mexico and abroad gathered at the iconic Portal Maya on the night of December 31, 2025, to welcome the New Year at Playa Fest Año Nuevo 2026, a large-scale electronic music festival organized by the municipal government led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado.

The event, coordinated by the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts and the Municipal Tourism Secretariat, transformed Parque Fundadores into an immersive stage of electronic music, neon lighting, and monumental architecture. From 7:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., the Portal Maya became the focal point of a vibrant audiovisual experience that blended ancestral symbolism with futuristic aesthetics, featuring neon light design, cold pyrotechnics, and performances by three electronic music DJs who led the countdown into 2026.
Municipal Tourism Secretary Diana Estefanía Hernández explained that Playa Fest New Year 2026 was part of a broader strategy to strengthen the Playa del Carmen City Brand, diversify the destination’s tourism offerings, and position the city not only as a sun-and-beach destination, but also as an international center for entertainment, culture, and large-format events.
Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, director of the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts, noted that Playa Fest responded to a growing demand for contemporary cultural experiences and to the need to reactivate heritage spaces through events that generate economic spillover, temporary employment, and broad national and international media exposure for the municipality.
With initiatives like Playa Fest, Martínez Cuéllar said, Playa del Carmen has consolidated itself as one of the most important epicenters in the Mexican Caribbean for international events, aligning with policies that promote competitive tourism development, cultural innovation, and shared prosperity championed by Mayor Estefanía Mercado.
The festival was supported by coordinated efforts from the General Secretariat, Citizen Security, Civil Protection, Public Services, Public Lighting, and Institutional Image departments, ensuring optimal conditions of safety, logistics, and operations for residents and visitors alike during one of the busiest nights of the year.
