Playa del Carmen Residents Meet With President Sheinbaum Over Land Title Dispute

Residents of Colosio neighborhood in Playa del Carmen meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents of the Colosio neighborhood met with President Claudia Sheinbaum during her visit to Quintana Roo to protest what they call excessive fees for land titles that have stalled the regularization of their properties.

Sonia López Cardiel, a member of the neighborhood association’s board, said the president “did not disappoint us. She listened to us quickly, but very attentively.”

Founders of this Playa del Carmen neighborhood explained they still cannot obtain titles for their properties despite a decree for land regularization issued by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, due to what they consider excessive prices set by the National Institute for Sustainable Land (Insus).

The former local legislator argued that Insus is effectively charging them for the land indirectly, contrary to what the presidential decree indicates. She claimed the state government, instead of supporting them or trying to negotiate an agreement, “disappears.”

“Insus acts almost like Derimaya, charging prices that don’t correspond, to elderly people, even people over eighty years old,” she criticized.

Sheinbaum promised to speak with Edna Vega Rangel, head of Insus, to address the situation, ensure residents receive proper treatment, and include them in the Program to Regularize Human Settlements (PRAH) to obtain discounts on these costs.

“We want them to stop giving priority to opportunists who appear out of nowhere with papers that may be false or invalid, because they’re not people who live in the neighborhood,” she denounced. “We’re not going to give away the heritage that has cost us so much.”
