Playa del Carmen Reports Suspected Dengue Cases, Reinforces Prevention

Municipal health workers in Playa del Carmen carry out dengue prevention measures to eliminate mosquito breeding sites

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Municipal health centers in Playa del Carmen have no confirmed dengue cases on record, but suspected cases remain under investigation, according to Antonio Uribe Trujillo, head of the city’s municipal health service.

Uribe Trujillo said samples from the suspected cases have been sent to laboratories to confirm or rule out the disease. He added that the centers have not detected any cause for alarm, though recent rains could encourage standing water and create breeding sites for the mosquitoes that transmit dengue. Because of that risk, he urged residents to keep up preventive measures at home.

Officials Urge Household Action

The official said the collection of discarded containers and household items will continue, since objects that hold water can become mosquito breeding grounds. He highlighted the role of families in keeping such items out of their homes and yards.

Uribe Trujillo estimated that between 70 and 80 percent of successful prevention depends on eliminating breeding sites. Nebulization and thermal fogging come later in the process, he explained, so he asked residents to prioritize cleaning the areas where water collects.

He said the vector control department maintains a nebulization schedule that the public can check on the official website of the State Health Secretariat. The case count he provided covers only the municipal centers and does not represent a report from all health institutions operating in Playa del Carmen.
