Playa del Carmen, Mexico — As part of ongoing prevention and awareness actions regarding gender violence, the Playa del Carmen City Council held a community day in the Puerto Aventuras borough aimed at strengthening safe environments and guaranteeing women’s right to live a life free of violence.
The activity took place within the framework of Orange Day, an international initiative commemorated every 25th of the month with the goal of making visible and eradicating violence against women and girls. During the day, a talk on Prevention of Gender Violence was held, delivered by psycho-legal personnel from the Municipal Women’s Institute, as well as the “Mujeres en Ritmo Naranja: Fortalece tu voz” zumba class, conceived as a space for physical well-being, community coexistence, and collective reflection.
Representing the municipal government, the director of the Municipal Women’s Institute, Idania Gamboa Medina, highlighted the importance of maintaining sustained and coordinated actions that allow addressing the structural causes of violence, as well as strengthening information, prevention, and support for women from the community and institutional spheres.
The day saw the participation of around 150 people, including municipal authorities, representatives of state and municipal agencies, as well as the general public. Present were councilwoman Xel Ha Dehesa; Cinthia Canché, delegate of the Secretariat of Women (SEMUJERES) in Playa del Carmen; Alinne Castillo, coordinator of CAM DIF; Marbella Hernández, head of the Gender Equality Unit; Xiomara Rejón, representing the mayor of Puerto Aventuras, Gilberto Gómez; Laura Acosta, representing the Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, Antón Bojórquez; Dafne Flores, from the Municipal Health Secretariat; William Guerra, representing the Secretariat of Evaluation and Planning; Karla Coral, from the Secretariat of Civil Protection; and Ivette Solís, from the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts.
The educational community of the Luis Manuel Aguilar Cruz telesecundaria also joined, whose participation was highlighted as part of the preventive approach that seeks to raise awareness from an early age about gender equality, non-violence, and respect for human rights.
During the activities, it was emphasized that creating spaces for information, expression, and participation strengthens women’s autonomy, promotes community support networks, and contributes to building a more just, inclusive, and equal society, where violence is neither normalized nor tolerated.
These actions are part of the municipal strategy of zero tolerance for violence against women promoted by the administration headed by Estefanía Mercado, which includes inter-institutional work and constant presence in neighborhoods and boroughs of the municipality.
The Playa del Carmen Municipal Government reiterated that it will continue implementing coordinated actions for the prevention, attention, and eradication of gender violence, under the principle that living without violence is not a privilege, but a right that must be guaranteed in all spaces of the municipality.
