Playa del Carmen Recognizes Mayan Cooperatives With Community Tourism Award

Officials present a community tourism award to representatives of Mayan cooperatives in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — The Playa del Carmen Tourism Department is celebrating the recognition of two local Mayan cooperatives, Najil Tucha and Campamento Hidalgo y Cortez, which received the national Seed Community Tourism Distinction.

This award, part of a federal government strategy, marks a significant step in strengthening a more inclusive, sustainable, and culturally rooted tourism model for the region.

The honored cooperatives operate in the Mayan region of Quintana Roo, where tourism is built on traditional knowledge, local cuisine, nature experiences, and cultural practices. These offerings enrich visitor experiences while generating economic benefits for the communities.

The Playa del Carmen Tourism Department reaffirmed its commitment to work with various government levels and sector stakeholders to integrate such community-based experiences into the destination’s tourism ecosystem. The goal is to diversify the offerings and bolster the Mexican Caribbean’s position in domestic and international markets.

Support for community tourism is part of a strategic vision aiming to balance tourism development with cultural and environmental preservation, promoting a model where economic benefits flow directly to host communities.
