Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The municipal government of Solidaridad, under the leadership of Mayor Estefanía Mercado, has officially announced the 11th edition of the Tamal and Atole Fair. This event, which has become a cornerstone for promoting family togetherness and economic development, will take place on February 1 and 2 at the iconic Plaza 28 de Julio. Scheduled from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the celebration aims not only to delight attendees’ palates but also to create a space of identity where Mexico’s culinary roots meet the diversity of the population residing in this Caribbean tourist city.

The organization of the Tamal Fair is overseen by the Secretariat of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, whose head, Antón Bojórquez, emphasized that the current administration’s directive is clear: to strengthen local commerce through platforms that dignify the work of producers. This year, the festival is expected to exceed previous years’ expectations, serving as a showcase for families who find sustenance in the preparation of this traditional dish. Coordination between the public sector and private initiative has been key to ensuring that the plaza’s infrastructure is maximized, providing comfort for both exhibitors and the thousands of visitors anticipated over the weekend.

Local Gastronomy and Regional Economic Boost

One of the primary objectives of this festival is the promotion of local gastronomy, allowing homemakers and small entrepreneurs to have direct contact with the end consumer. According to Héctor Escobedo, president of the Riviera Maya Chefs Association, local gastronomy will be represented by an offering of 50 to 60 exhibitors. This variety ensures that attendees can find everything from the most traditional tamales, such as those with mole or chili strips, to gourmet and exotic creations using endemic ingredients from the region. The festival not only attracts residents but has also become an attraction for international tourism seeking authentic experiences outside conventional hotel circuits.

The economic impact of the fair is significant, as it reactivates supply chains involving producers of masa, banana leaves, spices, and meats. By promoting local gastronomy, the municipal government facilitates that cash flow remains within the community, directly supporting micro-entrepreneurs. Additionally, the presence of international participants from countries such as Guatemala, Colombia, Argentina, and Bolivia adds a layer of cultural exchange that enriches the event’s offerings. This international openness demonstrates that the Tamal Fair has transcended municipal borders, becoming a regionally relevant event that highlights the shared culinary heritage across Latin America.

Cultural Traditions and Artistic Program

Parallel to the culinary offerings, cultural traditions will occupy a central place in the event’s programming. The director of the Institute of Culture and Arts, Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, reported that a diverse artistic lineup has been designed to accompany the gastronomic sessions. Presentations will begin at 7:00 PM at the open-air forum of the plaza’s amphitheater. The public can enjoy folk and contemporary dance performances by students from the Autonomous University of Quintana Roo and the Playacar Technological Institute, as well as from the Academy of Musicians and Artists of the CROC. These artistic expressions are the ideal complement to rescue the cultural traditions that give meaning to the celebration of Candlemas Day.

The preservation of cultural traditions will also be reflected in live music, highlighting the special participation of the female mariachi group Estrellas del Caribe. This ensemble will add a festive and solemn touch to the inauguration, reaffirming women’s role in preserving Mexico’s intangible heritage. The goal of Estefanía Mercado’s government is for the public plaza to regain its vocation as the social heart of the municipality, where art and cuisine serve as bridges for social cohesion. Attendee safety is guaranteed through an operation coordinated by Civil Protection, ensuring a completely family-friendly and orderly environment for the approximately 4,000 people projected to attend the Tamal Fair daily.

An essential component of this edition is the culinary competition that will award excellence in tamal preparation. Registrations for this culinary competition are completely free, seeking to incentivize participation from the area’s best talents. The selection process will be divided into two stages: an elimination round on February 1 to choose the 10 best exponents, and the grand final on February 2. The prizes, consisting of 15,000 pesos for first place, 10,000 for second, and 5,000 for third, represent a significant incentive for participants. This culinary competition evaluates not only flavor but also technique, presentation, and the use of ingredients that respect the dish’s essence, thereby raising the quality standard of all exhibits at the fair.

Finally, the realization of the Tamal Fair represents an investment in Playa del Carmen’s social fabric. By combining efforts between municipal departments, chefs’ associations, and local artists, the government demonstrates management capacity that directly benefits citizens. The invitation remains open for locals and visitors to gather at Plaza 28 de Julio to enjoy a tradition that, after eleven years of history, continues to grow and adapt to new times without losing its soul. With this event, the municipality of Solidaridad prepares to experience one of its most colorful and flavorful annual celebrations, consolidating its position as a reference for culture and gastronomic tourism in the state.

The eleventh edition of this festival invites reflection on how public spaces can transform into engines of economy and identity pride. Beyond tasting, the fair represents an opportunity to recognize the value of the artisanal work of those who preserve our recipes, reminding us that cuisine is one of the most powerful languages to unite a community as diverse as ours.
