Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A local resident has publicly accused an employee of the parking management company PlayaParq of corruption, alleging the worker demanded 300 pesos in cash to remove a vehicle immobilization device from a foreign tourist’s car.
The incident occurred this past weekend on Calle 8, between Avenidas 15 and 20, near the old municipal building in the Centro neighborhood. A video circulating on social media shows a citizen confronting a uniformed PlayaParq employee identified as José, accusing him of personally collecting money from a woman to remove the boot, commonly called an “araña” locally.
The accuser, who appears to be a Playa del Carmen resident, told the employee that other witnesses observed the alleged corrupt act, with the woman stating she gave cash directly to the worker. The citizen explained to the victim that the proper procedure involves paying the fine at an Oxxo convenience store, prompting him to record the interaction as evidence.
According to the complaint, the incident involved a foreign woman believed to be a tourist. This is not the first time a PlayaParq employee has faced similar accusations, with critics noting that authorities have yet to address hiring and oversight practices at the company.
