Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — In response to public demand and with the goal of enhancing tourism competitiveness while ensuring a safe, functional, and dignified urban environment for visitors and residents, Mayor Estefanía Mercado led an inspection tour along the iconic Fifth Avenue, accompanied by key officials from her administration.
Comprehensive Review of Infrastructure and Public Safety
The inspection began at the intersection of Constituyentes Avenue and extended to the Fundadores Park area, covering one of the city’s most heavily trafficked and symbolic tourist zones. During the tour, the mayor assessed the condition of urban infrastructure, including street lighting, signage, and public furniture. Special attention was given to the state of utility access covers, many of which were found damaged or missing, posing risks to pedestrians and negatively impacting the city’s image.
"The condition of Fifth Avenue must reflect the level of city we aspire to be: modern, safe, inclusive, and on par with major international destinations," stated Mercado. "We cannot allow this vital artery for tourism and Playa del Carmen’s identity to remain in conditions that compromise its functionality and prestige."
Plans for Rehabilitation and Urban Order
The mayor announced that her administration is already developing a comprehensive rehabilitation and urban planning project for Fifth Avenue. The initiative will include infrastructure improvements, universal accessibility upgrades, aesthetic enhancements, public service optimization, street commerce reorganization, and sustainable development criteria. The plan aims to reinforce the area’s tourism appeal while reclaiming its value as a safe and livable public space.
Commitment to Economic and Social Development
Through this on-site inspection, Mercado reaffirmed her commitment to revitalizing key areas for economic growth, public safety, and urban dignity in Playa del Carmen. The initiative prioritizes quality of life for citizens and strengthens the city’s role as a leading tourist destination in the Mexican Caribbean.
