Playa del Carmen Mayor Invests $38.7 Million in Police Equipment and Body Cameras

Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado delivers tactical equipment and body cameras to municipal police officers

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado has delivered tactical equipment, uniforms, and 439 body cameras to municipal police officers as part of a 38.7 million peso investment aimed at improving public safety.

The equipment, funded through the Municipal Strengthening Contributions Fund (FORTAMUN), was handed over at the police headquarters. Mercado said the initiative seeks to dignify police work, enhance operational capabilities, and strengthen security conditions in the municipality.

The body cameras, integrated into officers’ vests, feature 360-degree night vision and cloud storage. They will enable real-time monitoring of police operations, increase transparency, and ensure accountability, officials said.

Carlos Alberto Montesinos García, head of the Municipal Public Security Department, emphasized that the high-tech equipment will help make police actions more transparent, reinforce accountability, and guarantee legality in procedures involving citizens.

He added that institutional strengthening is key to ensuring the proper functioning of the police force and providing greater protection to operational personnel in carrying out their duties.

The delivered equipment includes 14,485 items: complete uniform kits—shirts, pants, waterproof jackets, boots, tactical belts, and caps—along with protective gear such as Level IIIA ballistic vests with Level IV plates, helmets, handcuffs, elbow pads, knee pads, and tactical flashlights.

The event was attended by city council members, municipal officials, and police commanders, who noted that these actions align with the “Recovering Peace” axis of the Municipal Development Plan, which focuses on strengthening security as a shared responsibility.
