Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A major weapons delivery to local police forces on Tuesday signaled a pivotal moment in Playa del Carmen’s public safety efforts, with Mayor Estefanía Mercado framing the initiative as a cornerstone of her administration’s broader security strategy.

The ceremony, held at the Secretariat of Citizen Security, underscored the municipality’s commitment to institutional strengthening through increased patrols, advanced technology, ongoing officer training, and high-impact operational tools—including an aerial surveillance helicopter deployed earlier this year.

A Multifaceted Approach to Security

In her address, Mayor Mercado emphasized that security is achieved through concrete actions rather than rhetoric, citing collaborative efforts with State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar and coordination with state and federal agencies. She highlighted measurable improvements since the start of her term:

  • A 37% reduction in homicides
  • 42% fewer reports of gunfire
  • 58% fewer pedestrian robberies
  • 33% fewer vehicle thefts
  • 45% fewer business robberies
  • 221% more recovered vehicles
  • 122% increase in narcotics seizures

"The helicopter has not only been key to our security strategy; it has also saved lives in medical transfers, emergencies, and rescue missions across Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Holbox, and Punta Allen," Mercado stated. "Security also means protecting our people in their most critical moments."

She urged officers to uphold honesty, discipline, and commitment, declaring, "Security is a right, and ensuring it is our obligation. Let us continue working together with our hearts focused on what matters most: the lives and well-being of our people."

State and Municipal Leaders Affirm Progress

State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar praised Mercado’s leadership, calling the weapons handover a testament to her dedication to peace. "Playa del Carmen has become a national benchmark for police professionalization and equipment," he said, noting historic investments in patrol cars, uniforms, tablets, and the police helicopter within just seven months.

"Coordinated work and a clear vision are yielding real results," López Salazar added, reaffirming alignment with the National Security Strategy and the Attorney General’s Office’s ongoing support.

Raúl Tassinari González, Municipal Secretary of Citizen Security, detailed the equipment provided to officers:

  • 95 semi-automatic pistols
  • 100 high-caliber rifles
  • Thousands of rounds of ammunition

"This delivery symbolizes our firm commitment to family safety, the consolidation of a more prepared police force, and the construction of a municipality where peace and well-being are a reality for all," Tassinari González said.
