Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Playa del Carmen government and the Riviera Maya chapter of Coparmex, Mexico’s employers’ confederation, launched the Mi Pyme Coparmex program to strengthen local micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
The event took place at the Leona Vicario hall in the new municipal palace, bringing together representatives from business chambers, associations, entrepreneurs, and members of the Playa del Carmen Business School. The initiative aims to foster collaboration between the public and private sectors to promote the professionalization, formalization, and sustainable growth of local businesses.
Government and Private Sector Join Forces
Representing Mayor Estefanía Mercado, Economic Development and Investment Secretary Antón Bojórquez stated that the municipal administration promotes an economic policy with a social focus, aimed at ensuring investments translate into well-being and better job opportunities.
Coparmex Riviera Maya President Sugey Prieto Torres noted that 99 percent of businesses in Mexico are MSMEs, making their strengthening crucial for job creation and regional development.
She explained that the program offers organizational maturity diagnostics, support pathways, and a business advisory council to drive orderly and competitive growth for companies.
Program Structure and Pilot Results
Program Coordinator Estefanía Hellrox detailed that Mi Pyme Coparmex includes three professionalization routes: business fundamentals, structured management, and reference companies, along with training, networking, and national projection activities.
She reported that 42 companies participated in a pilot test, identifying opportunity areas primarily in technology and human resources.
State Economic Development Secretary Paul Carrillo de Cáceres, who also attended the event, highlighted that Playa del Carmen remains one of Quintana Roo’s main economic engines, with around 3,000 new formal jobs generated so far this year.
During the event, officials presented awards to companies that participated in the pilot program and formalized a collaboration agreement with the State Economic Development Secretariat to consolidate coordination between government and the business sector, aiming to enhance the competitiveness and longevity of MSMEs in the municipality.
